Looking for Elizabeth

An exercise in family reconstruction

I thought that finding information about Elizabeth Couper would be a straight-forward exercise. I would never have predicted the twists and turns we encountered as we sought to discover her origins and trace the important events of her life.

We came to realise that, of the many stories we had been told over the years about her and her son, Alexander, a few contained a little truth while others contained a great deal of misinformation.

The exercise was a learning process about how and where to search for Scottish records. By gathering and cross-referencing as much of the data as is possible for siblings and other family members as well, we eventually were able to assemble a clearer set of facts, not only about Elizabeth but about the Cooper family history.

We learnt important lessons about the accuracy of records as well as the veracity of those who provided information to complete those documents.
